Designing a series of book jackets for Susan Sontag’s collections of essays. As these are not novels, but collections, the collages serve to represent the amalgamation of her thoughts coming together as one piece. With the unifying element between the books being her name and identity. Two directions were explored, the first being a more contemplative and quiet collage experience, reflecting on the experience of reading philosophy essays. The second direction was exploring Sontag’s personality in which many reviewers considered her to be “brash” and “arrogant” when in actuality, she was just expressing herself without making herself smaller. This direction shows a punchier, more “punky” approach to philosophical writing with bright colors, funky collage focusing on human faces, and scratched texture.
